Local Links
The mission of St. John's is to "advance Community Support and Opportunities for People Living with Disabilities." Since 1868, St. John’s Community Services (SJCS) role as a non-profit human service agency has been to develop creative ways to support children and adults with disabilities as well as the communities in which they live.
The National Disability Rights Network (NDRN) is the nonprofit membership organization for the federally mandated Protection and Advocacy (P&A) Systems and Client Assistance Programs (CAP) for individuals with disabilities. Collectively, the P&A/CAP network is the largest provider of legally based advocacy services to people with disabilities in the United States.
DC Department of Mental Health
The goal of the Department of Mental Health is to develop, support, and oversee a comprehensive, community-based, consumer-driven, culturally competent, quality mental health system. This system should be responsive and accessible to children, youths, adults, and their families. It should leverage continuous positive change through its ability to learn and to partner. It should also ensure that mental health providers are accountable to consumers and offer services that promote recovery from mental illness.
Catholic Charities is the largest private social service organization in the Washington, D.C. area. Our mission is to strengthen the lives of those in need by giving help that empowers and hope that lasts. A new entity with a long history, Catholic Charities brings together the expertise of four outstanding social service agencies with deep roots in the community: Catholic Charities, Anchor Mental Health, the Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Institute for people with developmental disabilities, and the Spanish Catholic Center.
National Children's Center, Inc. (NCC)
The Mission of NCC is to to provide a lifetime of opportunities for people in our community with developmental disabilities to live full, meaningful and productive lives. Over the years, NCC began serving children with other developmental disabilities including cerebral palsy, autism, Down syndrome, and brain injuries. As our first children matured, NCC began to provide the adult services they required as well.
Today, more than 600 children and adults, ages 8 weeks through 70+ years, with developmental disabilities each day receive the services they require to grow, live and thrive in our community.
Board of Elections and Ethics, DC
The District of Columbia Board of Elections & Ethics (BOEE) is the independent agency of the District government responsible for the administration of elections, ballot access and voter registration. The BOEE consists of three active Board members, an Executive Director, a General Counsel and a number of support staff who run the day-to-day operations of the Agency.

The mission of the Department of Employment Services is to plan, develop and administer employment-related services to all segments of the Washington, DC metropolitan population. We achieve our mission through empowering and sustaining a diverse workforce, which enables all sectors of the community to achieve economic and social stability.

Developmental Disabilities Council
The Developmental Disabilities Council (DDC) operates in accordance with the Developmental Disabilities Assistance and the Bill of Rights Act, Public Law 106-402. Each year the Council receives federal funds that are used to advocate for District of Columbia residents with developmental disabilities and their families.
Disability and Business Technical Assistance Center (DBTAC)
This is the regional DBTAC that offers resources on the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The mission of the DC Office of Disability Rights (ODR) is to ensure that the programs, services, benefits, activities and facilities operated or funded by the District of Columbia are fully accessible to, and useable by people with disabilities. ODR is committed to inclusion, community-based services, and self-determination for people with disabilities. ODR is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the City's obligations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), as well as other disability rights laws.
The mission of the DC Commission on National and Community Service is to strengthen and promote the District of Columbia's spirit of service through partnerships, national service, and volunteerism.
Our mission is to improve the quality of life of all persons with developmental disabilities and their families through supports and advocacy. National APSE: The Network on Employment
The national chapter of APSE: The Network on Employment is a membership organization formed in 1988 as the Association for Persons in Supported Employment to improve and expand integrated employment opportunities, services, and outcomes for persons experiencing disabilities.
The Dartmouth Psychiatric Research Center has wonderful information regarding supported employment, including a manual on the Fidelity Scale. Their mission is as follows:
“Employment is a primary goal of most people with serious mental illness. The Dartmouth Supported Employment Center (DSEC) is designed to study employment services and supports to increase the number of people who work in sustained competitive employment.”
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
"SAMHSA was created to focus attention, programs, and funding on improving the lives of people with or at risk for mental and substance abuse disorders. SAMHSA supports numerous activities that focus on substance abuse prevention, addiction treatment and mental health services through its discretionary grant programs."

John Williams has been writing about disability issues since 1978 and, in 1982, coined the phrase “Assistive Technology,” which has since become the universal term to describe products that benefit people with disabilities. Mr. Williams is an award winning, former weekly columnist for Business Week Online Magazine. He has written about hundreds of products used by people with disabilities, has had more than 2000 articles published, and is author of the book "Assistive Technologies: Expanding a Universe of Opportunities for People with Disabilities." Mr. Williams is credited with raising the awareness of disability issues, especially the benefits of assistive technology, to a national level.

CIRRIE facilitates the sharing of information and expertise in rehabilitation research between the U.S. and other countries through a wide range of programs.

Ticket to Work and Request for Proposal on becoming an Employment Network
The Ticket to Work and Self-Sufficiency Program is the centerpiece of the Ticket to Work and Work Incentives Improvement Act of 1999. This program provides Social Security beneficiaries with disabilities more choices for receiving employment services. Under this program the Social Security Administration (SSA) is issuing Tickets to eligible beneficiaries who, in turn, may assign those Tickets to an Employment Network (EN) of their choice to obtain employment services, vocational rehabilitation services or other support services necessary to achieve a vocational goal. New regulations have been published.
